Becoming a Mosquito

This video from Curious George introduces students to the life cycle of mosquitoes. The students in the video observe mosquitoes in their early stages of development—as larvae and pupae—in a typical breeding ground: a birdbath. They also have a chance to view adult mosquitoes under a microscope to learn which mosquito species are responsible for certain diseases.

Healthy Snacks

In this animated video segment adapted from the Eagle Books series produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Rain That Dances and his friends learn about snacks. Mr. Eagle and Miss Rabbit explain that healthy snacks should not contain a lot of sugar and that all snacks should be eaten in small amounts. They explore some snacks that could be eaten every day, such as apple slices, carrots, cherries, and water. Coyote tries to entice them with less healthy snacks, such as cookies, soda pop, and potato chips. These snacks are “sometimes” foods, meaning that they are okay only if eaten once in a while.

In this animated video segment adapted from the Eagle Books series produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an American Indian boy named Rain That Dances meets Mr. Eagle, who is sad about the health of the people in the village. Mr. Eagle describes how hard work and physical activity used to be a way of life, making people strong and healthy, but now many people are sick with diabetes because of their new lifestyles. Rain That Dances learns how to prevent diabetes by eating healthy traditional foods and being more active, like his ancestors.
