Golden Snake Wild Dance | Beauty of Jasmine

In this video, a student percussion ensemble performs a popular Chinese song "Golden Snake Wild Dance." This song is popular throughout China and in Chinese communities in the United States. It is often performed as part of a Chinese New Years parade when enormous dragons made of paper or fabric are carried through the streets on long poles. Golden Snake is another name for golden dragon. In Chinese folklore, the dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good fortune. This resource is part of the Beauty of Jasmine collection.

Choral Performance | Beauty of Jasmine

In this choral performance video students perform, "Ocean Is My Hometown" and "Jasmine Flower," in Chinese and two students perform a ribbon dance during part of the performance. "Ocean is My Hometown" was written for the 1983 Chinese film, "The Calling of the Sea." When the film became a big hit, the song gained popularity. The second song performed by the choir, "Jasmine Flowers," also provokes a strong emotional response and is very popular. It was performed at the Olympics in 2008. Students in the Lexington (Kentucky) Chinese Music, Dance, and Arts Program perform an original contemporary dance. "Radiant Smile" or "Golden Smile" is a popular contemporary song for children in China. The lyrics are about beautiful flowers, fully bloomed under the bright warm sunshine. Happy children are like the beautiful flowers. They bring the world harmony, joy, and good prospects. The costumes and the movements represent flowers blooming and swaying in the sunshine.
