Episode 130: Quiz Show III - Hiccups | Salsa

The Three Bears (Los tres osos) go up against The Three Goats (Los tres chivos) for a third time in an elaborate production of "¿Qué es?" ("What Is It?"), but a case of the hiccups is giving Papa Bear (Papá Oso) fits. The Monster (el Monstruo) tries to help Papa Bear by scaring him with-of all things-a monster disguise, but it fails. In the ensuing competition, Papa Bear attempts to cure the hiccups by breathing into a bag, holding his breath, blowing up a balloon and, finally, drinking water. The bears come from behind and win, but the real winner is the hiccups, which still plague Papa Bear.

Episode 201: Jack and the Corn Stalk | Salsa

Once again, The Three Goats want pizza. This time they decide to call for a delivery. The Pizza Girl takes their order. They pool their money and send Small Goat to get the pizza. On the way back home, he trades the pizza for some special corn. The other two goats are very angry because they don't like corn, and they throw it away. Small Goat waters the corn and a giant cornstalk grows up into the sky, disrupting the Monster sitting down to dinner. Small Goat and the Monster work together to retrieve the pizza from the top of the corn stalk.

Episode 102: Making Soup | Salsa

Goldilocks (Ricitos de Oro, played by Niña) returns to the home of The Three Bears (Los tres osos) to redeem herself by making soup. But first she leaves to find her friend, Little Rat (Ratoncito), to help her. Once again the soup turns out to be too hot to eat and the entire group goes for a walk-all except Salsa, who enjoys the soup on his own.

Episode 103: The New Chair | Salsa

Goldilocks (Ricitos de Oro, played by Niña), Little Rat (Ratoncito) and The Three Bears (Los tres osos) set about fixing Baby Bear's (Bebé Oso) broken chair. After it is mended, they decide to touch it up with a new coat of paint. The group carefully considers the colors red and green, but the color blue wins the day. To everyone's dismay, Little Rat rocks in the new chair and breaks it again!

Episode 104: Hide and Seek | Salsa

Baby Bear (Bebé Oso) decides to play a game of hide and seek with his new friends-Goldilocks (Ricitos de Oro, played by Niña), Little Rat (Ratoncito) and Salsa. After everyone hides, Baby Bear searches high and low, atop beds and underneath tables, interrupting Papa Bear's (Papá Oso) sleep in the process. Once Little Rat and Goldilocks have turned up, everyone looks for Salsa, who they find in a green bowl – where he's enthusiastically playing maracas.

After the “Hola” song, Sra. Alicia and Susana greet each other and sing the “Buenos días” song,” reviewing the concepts of suave (soft) and fuerte (loud). Sra. Alicia reviews the greetings buenos días, buenas tardes, and buenas noches using props and gestures. She reviews the color blanco (white) and the body parts la mano (hand) and el pie (foot) by cutting out hands and feet from play dough. Then, Sra. Alicia leads students in the song “Mi cuerpo,” with Sr. Enrique playing el cuatro. The video closes with the “Adiós” song.

After the “Hola” song, Sra. Alicia and Susana introduce instrumentos musicales (musical instruments) and the terms fuerte (loud) and suave (soft) using their voices and the maracas and drum. Sra. Alicia reviews familiar body parts and movements and introduces el cuerpo (the body) and mi cuerpo (my body). She teaches the words and motions of a song chant, “Mi cuerpo,” about how the body “makes music.” Then she reads the book Números (Numbers). The video closes with the “Adiós” song.

Sra. Alicia and Susana review the difference between voz alta (high voice) and voz baja (low voice.) Sra. Alicia continues to review the terms alta (high) and baja (low) using a TPR activity; whenever a high voice is used the hands of the students go up, and whenever a low voice is used the hands go down. Sr. Modesto joins Sra. Alicia and we learn about el xilófono (the xylophone), demonstrating that the small keys in the xylophone have sonidos altos (high sounds) and the large keys in the xylophone have sonidos bajos (low sounds).

Sra. Alicia and Susana then ask each other ¿Te gusta…? (do you like?), followed by a variety of things including activities such as dancing and singing as well as the colors they enjoy. We meet Jose from Panama, who plays the congas. We learn that on the small conga Jose plays sonidos altos (high sounds) and on the large conga Jose plays sonidos bajos (low sounds.) Sra. Alicia goes to read a story, but first she has to ask for silence and in that way we find the difference between silencio (silence) and ruido (noise.) Sra. Alicia reads the book Silencio Ruido by Leslie Patricelli.

After the “Hola” song and greetings, Sra. Alicia and Susana remind students of the song “Verde arriba” (introduced in Lesson 5). Sra. Alicia has added an additional verse using two more colors, amarillo (yellow) and azul (blue). She invites students to sing the song slowly, then fast. With Sra. Alicia and Susanna we play “Manzanitas del Peru,” beginning slowly and then more quickly. Sra. Alicia reviews the parts of the body and teaches “Cabeza, brazos, piernas, y pies” (“Head, Arms, Legs, and Feet”), sing to the tune of “Head, shoulders, knees, and toes.” She leads singing the song at slow and fast tempos. Sra. Alicia introduces a new instrument, el triángulo (the triangle) and leads a counting activity, reviewing numbers one through eleven by counting instruments at a slow pace and at a fast pace. The lesson ends with the “Adios” song.

I Say Tomato | Oh Noah!

In the webisode I Say Tomato Abuela reaches into her purse for change and asks Noah for a newspaper "un periodico", gesturing toward someone reading the latest edition on a nearby park bench. But Noah misunderstands, thinking she wants the giant tomato featured in a photo on the front page. In the course of the webisode and related games viewers have the opportunity to learn the Spanish words for items found in Abuela's purse and an assortment of vegetables. In this lesson, students will practice their Spanish vocabulary by playing a variety of hands-on games and activities.

After the “Hola” song, there is a new movement activity combining numbers and commands. Then, Sra. Alicia prepares hot chocolate in the traditional Mexican way, using a special tool called a molinillo to mix milk, sugar, and cocoa. While beating the chocolate, she says a traditional chant called “El chocolate.” Susana and Sra. Alicia ask students to review and repeat the chant with them. Color words and numbers are also reviewed.
