In this video, students from the Lexington (Kentucky) Chinese Music, Dance and Arts Program (CMDAP) perform “Blooming Flower,” a Chinese fan dance. The Blooming Flower Fan Dance is a folk dance in the ceremonial/artistic tradition. The costumes, hairstyles, and fans combine with the choreography to create a mood of lighthearted joy as the dancers represent flowers emerging from the ground, swaying in the wind, and opening their faces to the sun. Students from the Lexington (Kentucky) Chinese Music, Dance, and Arts Program (CMDAP) perform a folk dance in the traditional Mongolian style. This dance, like many Mongolian folk dances, celebrates the importance of horses and horseback riding. In Mongolian culture, children learn to ride when they are as young as three years old. This performance combines Han and minority ethnic Chinese traditions. The first two songs and dances are from the Han tradition, while the others are from minority traditions.
