MN Original | Librettist & Composer Dominick Argento

Watch now: In 1962, the Walker Art Center commissioned Dominick Argento to compose an opera for Center Opera, now known as Minnesota Opera. More than 50 years later, Minnesota Opera continues to emphasize new works by contemporary librettists and composers, including a 2014 revision of Argento’s “The Dream of Valentino,” which premiered in 1993 at the Kennedy Center.

Among the many awards to his name, Argento has a Pulitzer Prize and a National Opera Association Lifetime Achievement Award. He is also Composer Laureate for the Minnesota Orchestra.

MN Original | Visual Artist Clarence Morgan

Watch now: Clarence Morgan’s abstract art reflects an interest in geometry and line, and is a departure from his classical training in figurative painting. He combines painting, drawing and collage to create intricate works that represent order among chaos.

Morgan works side by side with fellow artist and his wife, Arlene Burke-Morgan. An art professor at the University of Minnesota for more than two decades, his personal work can be found in the collections of many museums including the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Weisman Art Museum.

MN Original | Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies

MN Original | The Steeles

Learn about the musical Steele family. Singing together since childhood, J.D., Fred, Jearlyn, Jevetta and Billy Steele have been entertaining audiences around the globe for decades. Born in Gary, Indiana, five of the six Steele children found their way to Minneapolis where they eventually formed their musical group, The Steeles.

The siblings have performed on Broadway, on stages around the world, and with musicians such as Prince, George Clinton and Mavis Staples.

MN Original | 318 Cafe Open Mic

Learn about how when cousins Matty O’Reilly and Tom Peterson took over Excelsior’s 318 Cafe in 2004, they knew they had to keep the open mic tradition alive. They hired Matt Muller to emcee the first Wednesday of every month, when musicians of all stripes show up to hone their craft.

In addition to up-and-comers, musicians such as Dan Wilson, Chastity Brown, Adam Levy, Romantica and Caroline Smith have graced the 318 stage.

MN Original | Assemblage Artist Jan Elftmann

Learn how Jan Elftmann’s penchant for collecting objects shines through in all of her work. She makes art approachable for the every day person in her playful assemblage work and eye-catching art cars.

Elftmann helped found the Minnesota ArtCar Parade after she completed her first art car–a pick up truck covered with 10,000 wine bottle corks. She’s currently working on her third art car.

MN Original | Minnesota Citizens for the Arts

Learn about how Minnesota Citizens for the Arts (MCA) serves as a national model for arts advocacy. In addition to their creation of the State Arts Board and Regional Arts Councils, MCA partnered with the conservation community in 2008 to develop and pass the 25-year Legacy Amendment, which builds funding for the arts into Minnesota’s constitution.

Executive Director Sheila Smith shares accomplishments from the organization’s 40-year history.

MN Original | Painter Dan Bruggeman

MN Original | Mosaic Artist Michael Sweere

Learn how former art director, Michael Sweere created his first mosaics out of discarded product packaging from his various advertising accounts. After learning the basics of the medium, he started incorporating more traditional mosaic materials like tile and tin.

Sweere scours thrift stores and rummage sales to find materials for his work, which includes imagery of nature, animals and landscapes.

MN Original | Textile Artist Tim Harding

Learn how internationally known designer Tim Harding makes large-scale textiles out of colorful Chinese silks and other vibrant materials. Harding layers, cuts and assembles these fabrics to create the illusion that the flat work is actually 3-dimensional.

Harding’s work can be found around the world in museums and private collections, and even in an Abu Dhabi luxury hotel.
