MN Original | Librettist & Composer Dominick Argento

Watch now: In 1962, the Walker Art Center commissioned Dominick Argento to compose an opera for Center Opera, now known as Minnesota Opera. More than 50 years later, Minnesota Opera continues to emphasize new works by contemporary librettists and composers, including a 2014 revision of Argento’s “The Dream of Valentino,” which premiered in 1993 at the Kennedy Center.

Among the many awards to his name, Argento has a Pulitzer Prize and a National Opera Association Lifetime Achievement Award. He is also Composer Laureate for the Minnesota Orchestra.

MN Original | Minnesota Citizens for the Arts

Learn about how Minnesota Citizens for the Arts (MCA) serves as a national model for arts advocacy. In addition to their creation of the State Arts Board and Regional Arts Councils, MCA partnered with the conservation community in 2008 to develop and pass the 25-year Legacy Amendment, which builds funding for the arts into Minnesota’s constitution.

Executive Director Sheila Smith shares accomplishments from the organization’s 40-year history.

Hatcher’s stage productions have premiered locally at theaters like The Illusion, Children’s Theater Company and the Guthrie Theater, while nationally his work has been seen on Broadway. Hatcher has also worked on several major motion pictures including Stage Beauty (2004), Casanova(2005), The Duchess (2008) and Mr. Holmes (2015).

MN Original | Performer Timotha Lanae

Learn how music has been a part of Timotha Lanae’s life for as long as she can remember. She wrote her first song at 7 years old and stepped into her first stage role during high school.

Since then, Lanae has appeared in theatrical productions both locally and internationally, and released a solo album that hit number one on the 2013 U.K. Soul Chart. She is currently working on her original musical, REDdington. Despite her overseas success, Lanae calls Minnesota home and continues to find creative inspiration in her home state.

Explore how Hennepin Theatre Trust’s SpotLight Musical Theatre Program serves students from more than 60 Minnesota high schools through in-school workshops, formal evaluations and an annual award program called the SpotLight Showcase.

At the showcase, schools are recognized for their achievements from the year and select students perform music and choreography.
