The inventive and amusing paintings of Giuseppe Arcimboldo dazzled the courts of Europe. His imaginative combinations of fruits, vegetables, and flowers create allegorical portraits of emperors and witty caricatures of their courtiers, which won him the highest artistic honors bestowed by the Holy Roman Empire.

Since the Middle Ages, artists have used metalpoint to create some of the most beautiful and technically accomplished drawings ever made. Interest in the medium peaked during the Renaissance when it was embraced by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Albrecht Dürer. Revived in the nineteenth-century, metalpoint continues to be practiced today.

El Greco was born Domenikos Theotokopoulos in Crete. He began his career as a painter of icons for Byzantine churches. Moving to Italy and then to Spain, his work fused lessons learned from the glories of Byzantium with the ravishing color of Venetian art and the elegant artificialities of Roman mannerism. Settling in Toledo, he created a passionate outpouring of work.
