Mandarin Movement

In this Kindergarten through 5th grade activity, language and movement unite. There are two teachers who will read a command, once in Mandarin and once in English. The students listen to both languages and then perform what the command is. Students are asked to complete things such as sit down, stand up, stop and swim. This activity is great for working on psychomotor and cognitive skills.

The Blooming Flower Fan Dance is a folk dance in the ceremonial/artistic tradition. The costumes, hairstyles, and fans combine with the choreography to create a mood of lighthearted joy as the dancers represent flowers emerging from the ground, swaying in the wind, and opening their faces to the sun. Students from the Lexington (Kentucky) Chinese Music, Dance, and Arts Program (CMDAP) perform a folk dance in the traditional Mongolian style. This dance, like many Mongolian folk dances, celebrates the importance of horses and horseback riding. In Mongolian culture, children learn to ride when they are as young as three years old.
